Researching Railway History

The following are sources which may be able to assist in researching historical information about the NSW Railways:

State Heritage Inventory: An online database of NSW heritage places administered by Heritage Branch, NSW Office of Environment and Heritage.

Australian Railway Historical Society - Railway Resource Centre: ARHS RRC holds a vast array of information including historical photos. It is a volunteer based organisation and a small fee will be charged for requested research. Phone: (02) 9699-2736. Address: 67 Renwick St, Redfern, NSW.

NSW State Records: Most of the previous State Rail Authority (now RailCorp) archival collection was transferred to State Records in 2000. For information on accessing railway records, and the types of records available:

Local Studies/ Historical Society: Many Local Councils provide an online search of historical images through their library website or Local Studies section. A Local Historical Society may also be able to provide historical information for a site. Please contact the relevant LGA Council for further information.


Family or Staff Records of Former Railway Employees: If you require information regarding 'Staff history cards' that are less than 30 years ago, please phone: (02) 8922 1313. Written requests to the following address will be required for access to records:
