Experience a major part of Australia's railway history with the sights, sounds and smells of the steam era brought to life on an engineering masterpiece of the 19th Century - the Zig Zag Railway. Built in the 1860s, the Zig Zag was acclaimed world wide as an Engineering Masterpiece of the 19th Century. The Zig Zag was the vital link in the western line which carried people, produce and products to and from the western plains of New South Wales. In 1975 the Great Lithgow Zig Zag railway was revived by a group of dedicated volunteers, offering tourists steam train and railway motor rides from Clarence station down the breath-taking escarpment.
