Powder Van restoration - 9 August 2010

Mechanical work

  • The Wollongong Rail Traction hiab truck and driver worked with the team to flip the sub frame onto its back and load it onto the truck. The frame was transported to Thirlmere Rail Heritage Centre for sandblasting.
  • The other 2 sets of leaf springs were removed, cleaned with abrasive discs and painted.
  • 90% of the brake rigging components have been cleaned and painted.
  • Restoration of the combination brake cylinder/triple valve has commenced including stripping down and cleaning the sections in XPTs alkaline bath (Thanks XPT).

Body Work

  • The No 2 door frame 5"x 4" top and 4" x 4" side have been constructed from two donated Rail Infrastructure crossarms including mortise and tenon joints and door jam rebates. This is the test door. When we get this right we will be ready to build the other 7 with a production line approach.
  • 100% of the ceiling boards have been sanded back.
  • Matt and Rob have restored and reinstalled the external and internal corner brackets.
  • 12/16 door hinge brackets have been restored.
  • 32 roof rib L brackets were constructed by Tony Sheppard and installed to stabilise the ribs.
  • Graham used the lathe to turn up dozens of various size hard wood dowels. These are being installed in the many holes that were drilled in the PV over its life but were not part of its design.
  • 6 new horizontal tie rods were cut, threaded and installed in the recreated internal partitions
  • Matt Geary has restored brass plates that cover the internal steel screws. These plates protect the PV cargo from sparks.
  • Rob Leeson has shaped and fitted several new sections to replace the rotted sections on the country end skirt rail .
