"Heritage Listing Explained - What it Means for You"- A Heritage Council of NSW Publication
Compared to its first publication late last year, changes in this 2011 update include a new name to make it easier to find when searching online.
This short publication describes the effects and benefits of heritage listing in NSW in plain language to help community understanding. It has been produced especially for use by owners and local councils. Both local and state statutory listing are covered by the same publication so it applies across NSW. Demystifying listing in this way aims to establish reasonable expectations, perceptions and support from owners, and thereby the wider community.
It goes beyond the usual heritage listing subject matter. The findings from studies on economic effects, sustainability, and practical tips for changing heritage places are all covered. The myths and facts table at the end responds to the common misunderstandings and fears about listing.
As distinct from a technical guide about the listing process and principles (aka the Heritage Manual), this publication concentrates on commonly asked questions from owners or people outside the heritage profession. While it is endorsed as a Heritage Council of NSW publication, this publication has no impact on heritage practice in terms of changing or directing the listing/approvals process and principles. For these, continue to use the relevant technical material and guides: Heritage Council's "Assessing Heritage Significance", ICOMOS Burra Charter, Council's local environmental plans and development control plans, and the Heritage and EP&A Acts.

Community Engagement Training Program
Community (and stakeholder) engagement is increasingly becoming a requirement for successful projects. It is also emerging as a discipline in its own right with a body of knowledge and particular areas of expertise.
This course introduces participants to community engagement planning which provides practitioners an introduction to the discipline. Through participating in a rigorous learning by doing course methodology, participants will gain experience in developing community engagement plans and be able to discern effective community engagement from "tokenistic community consultation". Participants will also be able to ensure that community engagement is much more than providing opportunities for the vocal minority.
This is a 26 week course, with a study workload of 5-7 hours per week.

The publication briefly explains how Australian heritage and listing matter in the present day, beyond purely significance and links to the past. The most common questions about economic effects and acceptable change are also answered. Get on board - Rail Heritage Care Program 2011
RailCorps Office of Rail Heritage is pleased to announce that twelve Rail Reserve projects will be offered as part of the Rail Heritage Care program in 2011.
The program, facilitated by Conservation Volunteers Australia in partnership with the Office of Rail Heritage, assists custodians of NSW State-owned rail heritage assets to manage these significant items through extending volunteer participation.
Marianne Hammerton, Director of the Office of Rail Heritage said Volunteers are the lifeblood of NSW rail heritage organisations. The Rail Heritage Care program complements their efforts by providing additional volunteering support. Rail heritage items require many hours of attention and care. Much more can be achieved when we involve others in meeting this challenge.
CVA recruits volunteers for specific projects and provides OH & S training and accredited first aid certification. Volunteers commit to working two days a week for six months with a heritage group. Project opportunities vary, from rolling stock conservation, cataloguing items or site maintenance to improving the visitor experience.
Eveline Dingley, CVAs NSW Rail Heritage Project Coordinator said We are proud to be coordinating Rail Reserve projects during 2011 for the ORH. Volunteers make a vital contribution and they really enjoy the satisfaction from helping out. Its a great community project to be involved in - there are opportunities to both share and learn new skills, meet new people and find out more about local history.

Karen coordinates the volunteers program at the Historic Houses Trust of NSW, where there are more than 230 volunteers working across 12 museums. Karen will draw on her experience at the HHT and previous work at the Powerhouse Museum to discuss sustainable day to day volunteer management and training.
Going the Distance: Planning for Sustainability is a back-to-basics workshop which looks at different streams of planning that are crucial for cultural organisations: business planning, strategic planning, and recruitment/succession planning. There will also be an opportunity for local museums to attend a briefing session for the 2011 Standards Program, to be held in the South East Region next year. The Standards Program supports community museums through a 12 month process of self review and external feedback.

Museums & Galleries NSWs research into the economic and social contribution of council run museums, galleries and theatres in Central NSW reveals in hard figures the positive contribution to the local and regional communities and their economies made by the council operated facilities. The findings include their contribution to the regional gross product ($14 million), the strong economic and social benefits of volunteers and the creation of jobs outside the cultural sector.

Report on the Development of Arts and Cultural Infrastructure Outside the Sydney CBD released
The NSW Standing Committee on Public Works undertook an inquiry to examine the development of an arts and cultural plan for NSW and the alignment of government planning strategies for the development of arts and cultural infrastructure outside the Sydney CBD, including regional areas. Having an appropriate arts and cultural infrastructure is imperative to maintaining a vibrant community life. The presence of community halls and centres, art spaces and studios, enables talented individuals access to creating and developing important pieces of artistic work. In turn, local communities hugely benefit from the creative initiative of their peers and neighbours.

Pay Bus departs Central for Queensland
Last Sunday, the FP1 Rail Pay Bus - lovingly restored last year by a team of RailCorp apprentices - was removed from Central Station's concourse, having been on display since August.
The 1937 Pay Bus and accompanying 'Ca$h on Tracks' exhibition, which tells the colourful history of the pay bus fleet, is to go on show at the prestigious Workshops Rail Museum at Ipswich in Queensland until the end of the year.
Since its restoration, the Pay Bus has enjoyed a high profile on display at Central: thousands of customers have seen it; several publications, including the mX commuter newspaper, have given it coverage; RailCorp's InsideLine DVD, on track magazine and What's News weekly newsletter have covered it on multiple occasions.
Last month, along with the 'Ca$h on Tracks' exhibition, it won the Energy Australia National Trust Heritage Award 2010 in the Education (Corporate/Government) category.
Early 2011 the pay bus will return to the upgraded Rail Heritage Centre at Thirlmere where it will operate and be on show
The Office of Rail Heritage thanks all who assisted in the removal and storage of the bus including Ross Seghers, Pat Donoghue and the Rail Recovery Team, Les Kelemen, volunteers Greg Sayer and Graham Ball, Mick De La Motte and the apprentices from the FP1 Rail Pay Bus restoration team; and Shane Wheeler and Daniel Moulden who removed the exhibition.
